Why Colour Matters: Helping Kids Explore Feelings Through Creative Play

Colour is one of the first ways little imaginations come to life.

Before kids worry about whether something looks “right”, they reach for the colours they love, scribble outside the lines and create entire worlds from a handful of pens.

And sometimes, the colours they choose can be a lovely way to start a conversation.

What colour are you feeling today?

We often associate colours with different moods and feelings. Yellow might feel bright and happy. Blue might feel calm. Red might feel energetic. Purple might feel wonderfully imaginative.

But there doesn't have to be a right answer.

Ask a child what a colour feels like to them and you might get something completely unexpected.

Maybe blue reminds them of their favourite swimming pool. Red makes them think of a superhero. Green feels like exploring the garden. Yellow reminds them of sunshine, holidays or their favourite ice cream.

That's the fun of it.

Colour can give kids another way to explore an idea, memory or feeling without needing to find exactly the right words.

Creativity without a right or wrong answer

Kids spend plenty of time being told where to write, what to colour and how something is supposed to look.

Creative play can be different.

Give them a blank canvas and suddenly they're in charge.

They can make something wild. Something funny. Something that tells a story. They can draw something, decide they don't like it and start all over again.

That freedom to experiment is one of the ideas at the heart of Draw On Swimwear.

Our swimwear gives kids a canvas they can actually wear. They can draw on it, make it their own, wash it and create something completely different next time.

No perfect picture required.

Meet DOS, our colour-changing sea buddy

This idea also inspired a very special member of the DOS Crew.

DOS is our colourful cephalopod who loves changing colour to show how they're feeling.

Some days might feel bright and bubbly. Others might be quiet, calm, silly, adventurous or a little bit wobbly.

DOS reminds us that feelings can change, just like colours can.

And there's no wrong colour to choose.

Try it: create your colour story

Next time the pens come out, try turning drawing time into a little conversation.

Ask:

What colour are you feeling today?

If your day was a colour, what would it be?

What colour would you choose for your happiest memory?

What colours remind you of the ocean?

Can you draw something from your last adventure?

Or forget the questions completely and simply let them create.

You never quite know where a little imagination might take them.

More than something to wear

Draw On Swimwear started with a simple idea: what if kids could create the swimwear they wanted to wear?

But for us, the magic isn't really about creating the perfect swimsuit.

It's giving kids space to experiment, imagine and express themselves. To make something that's completely their own and proudly jump into the water wearing it.

Then wash it off and do it all over again.

Because every colour, scribble and splash can tell a story.

So, what will you create today?
